Continuing Education (CE)

a. In an endeavor to bring optimal treatment results to his patients, Dr. Hogan has made a significant commitment to continuing dental education (CE.) The state of Virginia requires that a doctor take only 15 hours of CE in any one calendar year. In the years from 2003 to 2009, Dr. Hogan averaged over 120 hours per year. In Dr. Hogan’s opinion, patients should be aware of the quantity and redundancy of their doctor’s training. A dental school can only teach so much. In addition, technology and techniques are ever-changing. It seems obvious that a doctor should regularly attend classes and study club meetings to maintain proficiency and educational updates. It is unfeasible to list every single continuing education course that Dr. Hogan attended. But, some of the more comprehensive course summaries include:
i. General Practice Residency: Dr. Hogan completed rotations or regularly performed the following: anesthesiology, internal medicine, emergency medicine, emergency dentistry, hospital dentistry, geriatric/elderly care, treatment of medically compromised patients, and oral/maxillofacial surgery.
ii. American Academy of Implant Dentistry 2006 annual meeting, Chicago: This included four days of comprehensive learning with respect to implant dentistry and the latest techniques and technology. Featured presentations of this meeting included esthetic dentistry, membrane use with implants, bone grafting techniques, immediate implant-overdentures, 3-dimensional CT treatment planning for implants, and soft tissue augmentation before and after implant placement.
iii. CEREC training, Baltimore, MD 2006: “CEREC” describes a specific type of computer and robotic milling machine that Dr. Hogan has implemented in the office. The benefit of CEREC is that patients can have beautiful, ceramic restorations completed in the same day and without any messy impression material. There is no need to wear a temporary for weeks while the crown is being fabricated. There is no need to worry about gagging on impression material with CEREC. Dr. Hogan is proficient in computer-assisted design and manufacturing.
iv. Medical College of Georgia AAID sponsored MAXI course: The MCG MAXI course included over 325 hours of CE focused in implant dentistry. Dr. Hogan made a significant commitment to travel to Atlanta or Augusta each of 10 months to improve his implant skills and knowledge. The course covered everything from diagnosis to complex tissue grafting. At the end of the course, Dr. Hogan passed the AAID written examination for Associate Fellow credentials in implant dentistry.
v. American Academy of Implant Dentistry 2007 annual meeting, Las Vegas: Like the 2006 meeting, there were 4 days of intense learning in implant dentistry. The focus of the meeting was surgical-phase therapy to include soft and hard tissue reconstruction, immediate placement of implants, tissue preservation, block-bone grafting and sinus grafting. Dr. Hogan spent an extra day with Dr. Leonard Linkow (world-renown pioneer in oral implantology) to learn about alternative implants to the common “screw” implant. With this technology many patients who were told they were not a candidate for implants may still be able to benefit from alternative implant therapy.
vi. American Academy of Implant Dentistry Southern District Meeting 2008, Atlanta: For 3 days, in a small setting of only 30 doctors, some of the most accomplished implant doctors in the country gathered to present cases and discuss solutions to patient’s problems. We focused on 3-dimensional treatment planning, implant maintenance, treatment of ailing implants, prosthetic solutions to complex problems, and pharmacology updates. Dr. Hogan received professional acknowledgement for presenting his own complex reconstruction case.
vii. American Academy of Implant Dentistry 2008 annual meeting, San Diego: The focus this year was on “Evidenced-based Dentistry.” With special presentations from clinicians and the Loma Linda school of implant dentistry, the presenters evaluated good, scientific literature for answers to everyday clinical questions. The meeting was overwhelmingly successful as we dispelled rumors and myths with real scientific data in respect to bone grafting, membrane use, short implants, mini implants, sinus surgery, ridge expansion, implant site development, platform switching and emergency implant placement. Dr. Hogan attended a special session on repairing implant overdentures.
viii. Tatum Institute, February 2009 with Dr. Richard Borgner, Florida: Dr. Hogan was one of only 11 dentists to attend 2 days of lecture by Dr. Borgner, nationally acclaimed reconstructive oral-implantologists who practiced with O’Hilt Tatum in Clearwater, Florida. We discussed and practiced bone block grafting, segmental osteotomies and Mandibular nerve lateralization.
ix. Medical University of South Carolina, April 2009 with Dr. John Russo, Dr. Robert Gellim, Dr. Thierry Bacro, Dr. Joe Krayer and Dr. P.D. Miller: The title of the course was “Bone and soft tissue grafting for the dental implantologist: a hands-on cadaver course.” Dr. Preston D. Miller is a world-renown periodontist who is credited with inventing some to the soft tissue procedures we use every day in clinical practice. Dr. Hogan had the opportunity to sit with him personally to perform these procedures on cadavers. This course was “hands-on” as doctors used fresh-frozen cadavers to review head and neck anatomy and perform periodontal/oral-surgery procedures with actual dental instruments. With only 20 doctors participating and 7 instructors, one-on-one instruction was enjoyed as we honed our surgical skills for oral implantology.
x. American Academy of Implant Dentistry, 2009 Associate Fellow Oral Board Exam, Chicago, IL: Dr. Hogan travelled to Chicago, IL to complete the examination process for Associate Fellow. He presented cases to the board 2 months prior for the examiners to review. Upon examination, he defended these cases under intense scrutiny from the examining doctors. In addition, the examiners presented other cases for discussion. Dr. Hogan performed “above board” for the examination in question. He looks forward to completion of the next level of accreditation in 2010!
xi. International Congress of Oral Implantologists Spring symposium 2009, Philadelphia, PA: A thoroughly extensive event in implant dentistry, Doctor Hogan attended lectures on minimally invasive surgery, analysis of tooth size, space size issues, gingival architecture solutions, improve doctor/patient/lab communications, implant maintenance issues, I-Cat-Analysis, treatment for peri-implantitis, ortho-implant realities, immediate provisionalization, Cad-Cam realities, occlusion, abutment selection and complications. Of particular note, Dr. Hogan was presented the Fellowship award in the ICOI.

Biography

Doctor Hogan began his professional studies at The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. There he attended both undergraduate university and dental college. At the school of dentistry, he served student council and the community while concurrently receiving clinical accolades and awards. He earned the Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree (DDS) in May 2003. In July of that year, he served in the U.S. Navy for the next 3 years as a dentist. Lieutenant Hogan completed a hospital residency at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. His experience was focused in oral surgery to include dental implantology. In 2005 and 2006, he served as the only dentist aboard the USS Ashland where he provided quality and comprehensive dental care to sailors, Marines, and foreign military. Concurrent with his military service and when not deployed, Dr. Hogan honed skills in civilian dental care while practicing general dentistry in Chesapeake for 2 years. Dr. Hogan left military service and partnered with Dr. Baxter in June 2006. Adding to his professional education, Dr. Hogan completed a 1-year postgraduate program in dental implantology sponsored by the American Association of Implant Dentistry.

Dr. Hogan credits his success to his experience with the spirit and discipline of the Marine Corps. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Academy of General Dentistry, the American Association of Implant Dentistry, the Virginia Dental Association, the Tidewater dental association. He is an officer and active participant in the Virginia Beach Dental Study Club, the CEREC study club, and the Seaboard Study Club.
